Louis A. Fernandez, Ph.D.

Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, Emeritus

Dr. Fernandez received his Ph.D. in geology from Syracuse University and has had a truly distinguished career in higher education. He served as Chair of Geology and Dean of the College of Sciences at the University of New Orleans before coming to CSUSB in 1991 as Dean of the College of Natural Sciences. He became Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs in 1994, a position from which he retired in 2009. He is a Fellow of the Geological Society of America and has served as chair of its Committee on Minorities in the Geosciences. As Provost, Dr. Fernandez made the final decisions on retention, tenure, and promotion, based on recommendations received from department, college, and sometimes university-level evaluators. He has a wealth of knowledge about, and a broad perspective on, the RTP process on this campus.
